Six must-do experiences in Japan

Japan is a fascinating country that seamlessly blends ancient traditions with cutting-edge technology and offers a unique cultural experience. So, it’s no wonder that it enjoys a healthy influx of visitors with over 25 million tourists recorded in 2023.

There are a wealth of attractions and must-see sites in Japan and it can be challenging to know what to include as part of your trip, especially if you have limited time in the country. But our six highlights can help you plan an unforgettable holiday.

History and culture in Kyoto

This enchanting city boasts over 1,600 temples as well as hundreds of shrines, each with its own unique story. Key sites include the vermilion torii gates of the Fushimi Inari-taisha Shrine. These iconic, orange-coloured gates and the fox statues that guard them are regarded as a sacred landmark. Immerse yourself in the serenity of the Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion), where you’ll find the top floors of this Zen temple adorned in gold leaf.

Local culinary delights

Japanese cuisine is so much more than just sushi! With so much to sample, you might want to consider choosing a guided Japan tour that allows you to experience regional specialities from across the country.

Try the famous Kobe beef in Kobe, a city renowned for its culinary scene and taste the local favourite, okonomiyaki, in Hiroshima. Other highlights include sampling a steaming bowl of authentic ramen or participating in a traditional tea ceremony.

Japan’s bullet train

Witness Japan’s phenomenal infrastructure firsthand with a ride on the Shinkansen, the world-famous bullet train. Travelling at speeds of almost 200 miles per hour, these sleek trains will whisk you across the country in comfort and with unrivalled efficiency, leaving you to marvel at the futuristic stations and soak up the ever-changing scenery.

Tranquillity in a ryokan

Stay in a ryokan, a traditional Japanese inn, where you can unwind in tranquil tatami-mat rooms, furnished with futons for sleeping. You’ll also discover the relaxing onsen (hot springs), known for their rejuvenating mineral waters and often surrounded by beautiful scenery.

Pop culture paradise

Akihabara in Tokyo is the ultimate playground and a haven for all things pop culture. Here you’ll find stores filled with figurines, the latest gadgets and collectible items straight out of your favourite shows. There’s plenty of fun to be had in the retro arcade brimming with classic games or you can take to the streets to explore the anime icons.

Hiking among breathtaking scenery

Enjoying the beauty of Mount Fuji, an active volcano and Japan’s most iconic landmark, is a must-do. If you’re feeling adventurous, consider tackling the challenging hike to the summit during the designated climbing season (typically July and August). For a less strenuous option, admire Mount Fuji from a scenic vantage point like Lake Kawaguchiko.

Whenever you choose to travel to Japan, you’re sure to find plenty of opportunities to explore the unique history, culture and landmarks that make this country truly remarkable.
